Step 1 — Register for the certification course

The Automotive Certification Course is the legally required first step, delivered online via Georgian College in partnership with OMVIC. Registration gets you the 197-page Student Manual and starts a hard deadline: you must write the test within 12 weeks.

Practical tip: don't register until you're within a few weeks of when you actually intend to study. The 12-week clock is generous, but drifting to week 11 is how panic studying happens.

Step 2 — Pass the test (80%, first try if possible)

The test covers all 18 topic areas of the manual: the MVDA, registration, disclosure, advertising, the Consumer Protection Act, ethics and more. It's detail-dense — see our honest difficulty breakdown — but very passable with structured study.

Efficient route: plain-English chapter summaries → quiz after each → flashcards for the numbers → two timed mock exams. That loop reliably lands students above the bar in one to seven days of studying.

Step 3 — Find your sponsoring dealer

Salesperson registration requires employment with (sponsorship by) a registered dealer. Many candidates pass the test first, then job-hunt with certification in hand — hiring managers move faster on candidates who can legally start selling in days.

Both franchised dealerships and independents sponsor; interviews typically care more about people skills than car knowledge. The certification signals you'll handle the compliance side properly.

Step 4 — Apply for OMVIC registration

With a sponsor confirmed, you file the salesperson application with fees and disclosures (including background questions). OMVIC reviews and — absent complications — approves. You may not sell until registration is granted, and afterwards you must keep information current (address changes within 5 days!).

What you'll earn and what the job is really like

Compensation is typically base-plus-commission. Realistic first-year earnings for full-time salespeople commonly land between $45,000 and $80,000+, with strong performers exceeding that meaningfully. Hours include evenings and Saturdays; income follows effort and skill more directly than most jobs.

The exam material genuinely matters on the job: all-in pricing, disclosure duties and contract requirements are daily realities, and violations are career-limiting. Learning it properly now is a working asset, not a hoop.
